The Anaheim Ducks signed veteran center Saku Koivu to a one-year contract extension on Friday.

The 38-year-old Finn completed his fourth season with the Ducks and had eight goals and 19 assists in 47 games.

"We are happy to bring back a character player like Saku," said Ducks general manager Bob Murray. "At this stage in his career, his first priority is to win, and we are happy he's decided this is the place for him."

Prior to joining the Ducks, Koivu spent the first 13 seasons of his career with the Montreal Canadiens, for whom he served as captain for 10 years, a mark matched only by Jean Beliveau in the franchise's illustrious history.

The 21st overall selection in the 1993 draft, Koivu has totaled 244 goals and 803 points in 1,059 NHL games.
