Four share lead at AT&T National

Bethesda, MD – James Driscoll and Bill Haas each shot a 3- under 68 on Saturday to grab a share of the lead after three rounds of the AT&T National.

Andres Romero posted a 1-under 70 during his third round, while Roberto Castro saved par with a chip in from 26 yards out at the 18th hole to close out an even-par 71 to join Driscoll and Haas atop the leaderboard at 7-under-par 206.

"It's not perfect golf, but you don't really have to play perfect golf sometimes," said Driscoll. "If you're just patient and putt well and have a good short game, it can go a long way, and that's kind of what I'm doing this week."

Jason Kokrak also carded a 70 at Congressional Country Club's Blue Course to take sole possession of fifth place at 6-under, which is a stroke better than Charlie Wi (65) and Tom Gillis (66).

Pebble Beach National Pro-Am winner Brandt Snedeker (69), Jordan Spieth (74) and Brendon Todd (68) are tied for eighth at 4-under 209.

Castro and Spieth maintained their share of the lead at 7-under when the second round was completed Saturday morning, but Spieth was able to quickly pull ahead by opening his third round with birdies at the first and second.

Castro, meanwhile, fell off the pace with a bogey at the second that he followed with a double bogey at the third, dropping him to 4-under.

Spieth then dropped a shot with a bogey at the fifth to fall to 8-under and into a tie for the lead with Romero, who picked up shots at the second and fourth to meet Spieth there.

Romero birdied the sixth to grab the outright lead and pulled ahead by two strokes with another gain at the eighth.

Spieth fell out of contention with a double bogey at the eighth and a bogey at the ninth, while Haas jumped into second place at 8-under with four birdies over a five-hole span from the fifth.

Haas, however, hit his third shot at the par-4 11th into the water en route to a triple bogey, dropping him to minus-5.

It was then Romero's turn to fall down the leaderboard as he was forced to take a penalty stroke following an errant drive at the 11th and then 2-putted for a double bogey after blasting out of a greenside bunker to drop to 8- under.

He followed that with a bogey at the 12th to fall into a tie for first with Driscoll. Romero ended his round with six straight pars to end at 7-under.

Haas had climbed back up to 7-under with consecutive birdies at the 12th and 13th, while Driscoll traded a bogey at the second with birdies at the first, sixth, ninth and 10th to grab a share of the lead.

Driscoll briefly fell behind with a bogey at the 15th before bouncing back with a birdie at the 16th. He parred his final two holes.

Haas again moved to 8-under with his third birdie in four holes at the 15th, but bogeyed the 16th to fall back to 7-under.

"Certainly, could have been a 6-, 7-, 8-under day," Haas said. "But it also could have been a 4-, 5-, 6-over day if I hadn't putted well."

Castro steadily made his way back into contention with a pair of consecutive gains at the seventh and eighth, and 16th and 17th around a bogey at the 11th.

He almost fell behind after hitting his second shot at the par-4 18th into the water, but he was able to hole out his next shot to maintain a share of the lead.

NOTES: The second round was completed Saturday morning after play was suspended Friday night due to lightning ... Romero has just one top-10 finish this season and is looking for his first win since the 2008 Zurich Classic of New Orleans and his second victory overall ... Driscoll and Castro are seeking their first career win on the PGA Tour, while Haas is trying for his fifth ... Haas has converted just one of four 54-hole leads into a victory ... Castro, Romero and Driscoll are holding the 54-hole lead for the first time in their careers.
