Mo Cheeks is the latest in a line of Detroit Pistons head coaches who will try to maximize the potential of an underachieving group.
The Pistons actually possess quite a few talented young players. Big men Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond comprise an awesome center/power-forward nucleus for years to come.
Brandon Knight switched to shooting guard once the Pistons acquired Jose Calderon a little before the trade deadline. Calderon is a free-agent and there isn't much buzz about Detroit bringing him back.
That could mean point guard is a possible option at No. 8.
If Michigan's Trey Burke was available, Joe Dumars and the rest of the Pistons' brass might break into song. He's the best lead guard in the draft and that local connection would be too tantalizing to overlook.
Problem is, Burke could go as high as No. 2 to the Orlando Magic. Syracuse's Michael Carter-Williams might make more sense. At 6-foot-6, Carter-Williams has the size to cover three different spots and is a solid point guard. He needs work though.
Other points that should be available in that area are Lehigh's C.J. McCollum or Miami's Shane Larkin.
Small-forward is probably another need, but does UCLA's Shabazz Muhammad warrant going that high?
