Omaha, NE – Nick Vander Tuig spun seven stellar innings to help UCLA slip past North Carolina State, 2-1, to remain perfect in the 2013 College World Series.
Vander Tuig (13-4) allowed just one run on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks in his outing. David Berg pitched the last two innings surrendering just one hit to earn his NCAA record-tying 23rd save.
The Bruins were down a run going into the fifth. With one out, Cody Regis worked a walk, Brenton Allen singled and Brian Carroll walked to load the bases, chasing NC State starter Logan Jernigan (1-1) from the game. Kevin Kramer delivered an RBI single off Grant Sasser to right to even the score. A wild pitch brought home Allen, the game-winning run.
The Wolfpack started the third inning off with Bryan Adametz being beamed and an Armstrong single to left. Following a sacrifice bunt by Logan Ratledge, Trea Turner delivered an RBI single to left to score Adametz. After the throw flew over catcher Shane Zeile's head, Armstrong tried to score but was out at the plate to keep the deficit to one.
Jernigan was dished his first loss of the year after tossing 4 1/3 innings yielding two runs on three hits and three walks.
Earlier on Tuesday, North Carolina beat LSU, 4-2, to eliminate the Tigers from the 2013 College World Series.
Already up 2-0 thanks to a Brian Holberton blast, Landon Lassiter doubled for UNC to start the third and Colin Moran followed with a single that plated him and chased Cody Glenn from the mound.
Mason Katz drove in Sean McMullen to get LSU on the board in the home fifth, but Skye Bolt's seventh-inning run-scoring single restored UNC's three-run edge.
North Carolina State now faces North Carolina, the No. 1 national seed in this year's NCAA Tournament, on Thursday in an elimination game. UCLA will play the winner of the Tar Heels-Wolfpack matchup.
