Omaha, NE – Matt Boyd tossed a complete game and Jake Rodriguez provided a critical fourth-inning sacrifice fly to help Oregon State defeat Indiana, 1-0, eliminating the Hoosiers from the 2013 NCAA men's baseball College World Series.
Boyd allowed just four hits and fanned 11 batters while walking three in the victory. Kavin Keyes had two hits and scored the game's only run, while Ryan Barnes also supplied two hits.
The Beavers (52-12) advance to face Mississippi State on Friday, but they must beat the Bulldogs twice in order to reach to the best-of-three game championship series.
Indiana starter and Big Ten Conference Pitcher of the Year Aaron Slegers picked up just his second loss of the season while allowing seven hits and one run. The righty also lasted the entire game -- the first of his career -- and struck out five.
Boyd stifled and controlled the tempo for the Beavers for most of the contest, while Oregon State finally broke through versus Slegers in the fourth.
Keyes led off with a single and advanced to third on Barnes' double down the left-field line. Rodriguez then provided the lone run with a sacrifice fly just deep enough to right, allowing Keyes to score and make it 1-0.
The Hoosiers threatened in the home half of the fifth as Michael Basil provided the team's first hit with a one-out single and Dustin DeMuth followed by reaching on a bunt hit. Boyd, though, regrouped and forced back-to-back fly outs to end the inning.
Indiana (49-16), which ends one of the best seasons in program history, had one runner on first base in the eighth and ninth innings, but Boyd never faltered and was able to hold on for the win, OSU's 12th shutout of the season.
It was the first 1-0 victory at the CWS since 1985.
