Mets activate Atchison, place Turner on DL

The New York Mets activated pitcher Scott Atchison from the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday and subsequently sent infielder Justin Turner to the DL.

The 37-year-old Atchison was placed on the disabled list on May 14 with inflammation in his right elbow. He has made 19 appearances and allowed nine earned runs in 18 innings of work this season.

Turner is dealing with a left intercostal strain and his move to the 15-day disabled list will be retroactive to June 17. He has posted a .266 batting average in 44 games this season.

Lastly, New York recalled pitcher Zack Wheeler from Triple-A Las Vegas to make his major league debut in the nightcap of a doubleheader with the Atlanta Braves.

Wheeler was the sixth overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft and pitched to a 4-2 record with a 3.93 earned run average in 13 starts with Las Vegas this season.
