NC State downs North Carolina in CWS opener

Omaha, NE – Carlos Rodon threw a complete game and North Carolina State defeated North Carolina, 8-1, Sunday, in the opening round of the 2013 College World Series.

Rodon (10-2) allowed just one run on five hits and two walks while striking out eight in his outing.

Logan Ratledge drove in two runs while Brett Williams, Tarran Senay, Brett Austin, Bryan Adametz, Grant Clyde and Jake Armstrong each contributed an RBI apiece.

North Carolina State (50-14) advances to Tuesday's winners bracket to face the winner between No. 4 national seed LSU and UCLA, who play later Sunday night.

Kent Emanuel allowed five runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings for North Carolina (57-11), the No. 1 national seed in this year's NCAA Tournament. They will take on the loser of the Tigers-Bruins matchup in an elimination contest also scheduled for Tuesday.

Trea Turner drew a walk for the Wolfpack to begin the game, stole second base, and scored on a single by Senay.

North Carolina's best opportunity early came in the bottom of the inning. Chaz Frank walked to start and stole second. However, Colin Moran struck out and Skye Bolt grounded out to end the frame.

With two outs in the third, Clyde, Williams and Adamez connected on three consecutive RBI hits to give NC State a 4-0 lead. Emanuel was then replaced by Chris McCue, who walked Jake Armstrong before giving up an RBI single to Ratledge.

The Wolfpack added one run in the eighth. Ratledge hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on a wild pitch thrown by Trevor Kelley. After Turner was walked and Jake Fincher hit a sacrifice bunt, Reilly Hovis came in relief, but Austin hit a sacrifice fly to left, plating Ratledge.

Clyde drew a walk to begin the ninth while Williams and Adametz singled to load the bases. Armstrong then grounded into a fielder's choice but was able to bring Clyde home. The next batter, Ratledge, grounded out to second but scored Williams.

North Carolina finally got a run across in the home half. Landon Lassiter knocked a double to right center, scoring Frank, who singled to lead off. However, Rodon retired Moran, Bolt and pinch-hitter Grayson Atwood to end the game.
