New York, NY – New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner has been selected as the American League's Player of the Week for the games played from June 3-9.
Gardner earned the honor -- the first of his six-year career -- by batting .520 (13-for-25) with five doubles, one home run, six RBI and five runs scored while helping the Yankees to a 6-1 record during the week. He also amassed 21 total bases over the seven games, the second-highest amount in the majors during that period, along with a .556 on-base percentage.
The 29-year-old began the week by coming through with a tie-breaking two-run single during the sixth inning of a 7-4 victory over Cleveland on June 3, then belted a three-run homer in another win over the Indians two days later. Gardner capped things off with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate in Sunday's 2-1 decision at Seattle.
Two other Yankees, pitchers CC Sabathia and Mariano Rivera, were also under consideration for this week's award along with Boston's Mike Carp, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and David Ortiz as well as Oakland's Yoenis Cespedes.
