Everton confirmed the appointment of Roberto Martinez as the club's new manager on Wednesday after the Spaniard left Wigan to take up the post.

It was announced on May 9 that David Moyes was leaving Goodison Park to take the place of Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager, and Martinez was tabbed as the leading candidate.

Martinez has now penned a four-year contract with the Toffees after securing his departure from Wigan, which is expected to receive around $2.3 million from Everton as compensation to buy out the final 12 months of the Spaniard's contract.

The 39-year-old guided Wigan to its first FA Cup title this past season, but after keeping the Latics in the top flight since his arrival in 2009, the club was unable to avoid relegation in May, finishing three points from safety.
