The San Francisco 49ers have hired former New York Jets and Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini as a senior offensive consultant.

Mangini had been out of football since being fired by the Browns following a 5-11 season in 2010, having served the past two years as a studio analyst for ESPN.

The 42-year-old led the Jets to a surprising 10-6 record and an AFC playoff appearance during his first year at the helm in 2006, but New York failed to reach the postseason in the subsequent two campaigns while going 13-19 over that span. Mangini was fired by the Jets after the team lost five of its final six games following an 8-3 start in 2008.

Mangini resurfaced as the Browns' head coach the next year, but managed a pair of five-win seasons before being let go by then-president Mike Holmgren.

Prior to taking over the Jets, Mangini spent six seasons as a defensive assistant under Bill Belichick in New England and was a part of three Super Bowl champion teams with the Patriots.
