Hawks president Bob Williams says a letter to potential ticket-buyers promoting Atlanta's chances of signing Chris Paul and Dwight Howard was an "unfortunate" mistake.

The sales letter, first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and obtained by The Associated Press, says interest is "skyrocketing" as the Hawks' "possibilities of landing Chris Paul & Dwight Howard become more and more of a reality."

Williams' statement Tuesday was to show the sales pitch was not tampering.

He confirmed the ticket representative is a member of the team's business staff. Williams says the staffer's "specific reference clearly does not represent how our basketball operations or our business staff have consistently communicated about free agency."

Howard and Paul are under contract with the Lakers and Clippers, respectively, and can become free agents on July 1.
