Putnam cruises to Mid-Atlantic Championship title

Potomac, MD – Michael Putnam carded a 2-under 68 on Sunday to cruise to a 2-stroke victory at the Mid-Atlantic Championship.

Putnam finished the tournament at 7-under-par 273 to capture his second straight win and his third on the Web.com Tour overall. He was coming off a victory at the Mexico Championship last week.

"It's the second week in a row and I can't get used to it enough," Putnam said.

Chesson Hadley (67) captured second at 5-under, while third-round co-leader Chad Collins tripped to a 2-over 72 to drop into a share of third at minus-3.

Collins was joined by Bronson La'Cassie (67) and Daniel Chopra (70).

Peter Tomasulo recorded the low round of the day at TPC Potomac at Avenal Farm with a 5-under 65 to jump into a tie for sixth place with Scott Dunlap (71), Sung Kang (73) and Alex Prugh (68) at 1-under 279.

Collins and Putnam entered the day knotted at 5-under, but the tie did not last long as Collins bogeyed the first to fall a shot off the pace.

Putnam birdied the second to move two strokes clear, but Collins answered with a birdie at the third to again make it a 1-stroke difference.

After they both birdied the fifth, there was a 2-stroke swing at the sixth as Putnam rolled in a birdie while Collins tripped to a bogey.

Collins would drop shots over his next three holes to fall out of contention.

Putnam followed his birdie at the fifth with another at the sixth, and then parred his next seven holes to stay at 8-under.

Hadley, meanwhile, took advantage of Collins' troubles with birdies at the second, fifth, ninth, 10th and 14th around bogeys at the first and eighth to jump into second place at minus-5.

Putnam's advantage briefly dropped to two strokes with a bogey at the 14th, but Hadley bogeyed the 15th to remain three strokes back.

Hadley put a little pressure on Putnam with a birdie at the 17th before closing with a par, but Putnam traded a birdie at the 16th with a bogey at the 17th to stay two stroke clear of Hadley and parred his final hole to close out the victory.

"To pull away from the field early was big, especially with the windy conditions and knowing it was going to be a tough day," said Putnam. "It was going to be tough to make any birdies today and to start off with three cemented the lead for a good while."

NOTES: Putnam, who leads the Web.com Tour's money list, collected $108,000 with the win. He is more than $132,000 in front of No. 2 Edward Loar ... The four-day scoring average for the par-70 layout was 72.63, with only nine players finishing under par this week. It was the fewest on Tour since the 2012 Panama Claro Championship when Loar's winning score was 4-under and only six players were under par for the week ... The Web.com Tour has the week off next week before returning for the Air Capital Classic, where Casey Wittenberg fired a 5-under 66 during his final round last year to capture his second title of the season.
