Philadelphia, PA – A five-run fifth inning from the San Diego Toreros allowed them to get past the cross-town rival San Diego State Aztecs, 6-3, in the loser's bracket of the Los Angeles Regional.
Austin Green went 1-for-4 with two RBI as one of four players that drove in a run for San Diego (36-24). No player for the Toreros had a multi-hit game. Dylan Covey allowed three runs over 7 2/3 innings of work for the win and Troy Conyers didn't allow a run in the final 1 1/3 innings to get the save.
San Diego State (31-31) managed just five hits as a team while Michael Cederoth took the loss after walking five batters and allowing four runs, three of which were earned, over 4 1/3 innings. With the loss the Aztecs were eliminated from the double-elimination regional.
In the winner's bracket the UCLA Bruins climbed out of a late hole to earn a 6-4 win over the Cal Poly Mustangs and take control of the regional.
The Mustangs (40-18) ran out to a 4-0 lead after four innings. The Bruins (41-17) then scored four runs in the sixth inning and another two in the seventh to pull ahead and claim the victory.
Kevin Williams was just 1-for-4 but his one hit was a big three-run triple during the sixth-inning rally. Nick Vander Tuig allowed all four of the Mustangs' runs but lasted six innings and got the win.
Cal Poly starter Matt Imhof was taken out with one out in the sixth and was responsible for the first four runs the Bruins scored. However Reed Reilly let up the next two runs in the following inning to take the loss.
With two wins in the first two days UCLA advanced to the regional final on Sunday. There the Bruins will await the winner of the elimination game between Cal Poly and San Diego earlier in the day. On Friday Cal Poly defeated San Diego by a 9-2 score.
