Washington WR James Johnson retires from football due to wrist injury

SEATTLE – Washington wide receiver James Johnson has retired from football due to a wrist injury, ending a once-promising career that was plagued by injuries.

The school announced Johnson's decision Thursday. He was expected to compete for a starting receiver spot this fall.

Johnson's career started with a flourish. He caught a touchdown pass in coach Steve Sarkisian's first game with the Huskies against LSU in 2009. Johnson caught 39 passes for 422 yards and three touchdowns in 2009, but played in just six games as a sophomore and fell down the depth chart as a junior.

Johnson injured his wrist during training camp last August and missed the entire 2012 season.

Washington also announced that receiver Jamaal Jones, defensive back Darien Washington, running back Erich Wilson II and linebacker Evan Zeger have requested and been granted release from the program.
