United States President Cup captain Fred Couples named former Ryder Cup captain and close friend Davis Love III as one of his assistants for this year's competition on Wednesday.

"I'm really excited to have Davis as part of the team," said Couples. "He is one of my closest friends and his experience as a team member and Ryder Cup captain will be invaluable at Muirfield in October. I know his friendships and relationships with the players out on tour will also be a huge help to me leading into The Presidents Cup."

Love was the most recent US Ryder Cup captain and his team suffered the worst final-day defeat in American Ryder Cup history in October.

Love played on six Presidents Cup teams amassing a 16-8-5 record. He teamed with Couples eight times in the international event and the pair went 5-2-1.

"I'm so excited to help Freddie out as a captain's assistant," said Love. "He helped me out a lot during the Ryder Cup, and I'm really excited to come to a Presidents Cup at Muirfield. This is going to be an incredible venue for the event. And it will be fun to be back in the team room with the guys again so soon. I hope to play alongside potential U.S. team members a lot this year and help Fred out that way since I'm on tour more than he is. But I'm happy to help out in any way I can - drive the cart around, keep up with the towels, whatever he needs. I'm just glad to be a part of the event."

The announcement was made at Muirfield Village, site of this week's Memorial and the Presidents Cup in October.

At Captain's Media Day last October, Jay Haas was named as an assistant captain to Couples. Haas served as the assistant captain in 2009 and 2011, both years that Couples was captain and won the event. Unlike Couples's decision to have only two assistants, International Captain Nick Price allotted three assistants in Shigeki Maruyama, Mark McNutlty, and Tony Johnstone.

This year's Presidents Cup will be Oct. 3-6 and Couples' American team has won the last four competitions.
