NEWARK, N.J. – A Rutgers University dean who took part in the search for a new athletic director says she's "mystified" and "dumbfounded" that a search firm didn't find red flags about the woman who was chosen for the job.
It's been reported this week that volleyball players complained to the University of Tennessee that Julie Hermann humiliated them and mentally abused them when she was their coach in the 1990s.
Hermann is slated to take over next month at an athletic department recovering from revelations that a former basketball coach used anti-gay slurs and pushed and kicked players during practices.
School of Management and Labor Relations Dean Susan Schurman says it's the job of a search firm to find problems like that in job candidates' past.
The university has stood behind Hermann.
