CUP: Johnson Sets Record With All-Star Win

Jimmie Johnson passed his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne with nine laps to go to win Saturday night’s Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

With the victory, Johnson became the first four-time winner in the 29-race history of the event. Joey Logano passed Kahne with six laps to go to secure second place in his Penske Racing Ford. Kyle Busch passed Kahne on the penultimate lap to finish third, with brother Kurt finishing fifth.

Prior to the final 10-lap stretch, Kasey Kahne won the race off pit road, ahead of Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Joey Logano and Kurt Busch.

The Busch brothers had the best average finish during the first four segments, so they were the first two to enter pit road for the mandatory four-tire pit stop before the final 10-lap segment. But it was Kahne who made the best stop and came out with the lead.

On the restart for segment four, Kahne used a two-tire stop to get out front, while Kyle Busch got hung up and bounced off Dale Earnhardt Jr., Joey Logano and Ryan Newman. A caution flew on Lap 68 for debris from Greg Biffle’s car. After the restart, Kurt Busch passed Kahne and held on to win the segment. Jimmie Johnson was third.

The Busch brothers ran away from the field in segment three, with Kyle holding off Kurt for the segment victory over Hendrick Motorsports teammates Johnson and Earnhardt Jr.

Bowyer made a bold move to grab the lead from the Busch brothers at the start of the second segment. The first incident of the night occurred on Lap 24, when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. bounced off the frontstretch wall and into Mark Martin, who went spinning into the infield grass. On the restart, Kyle Busch muscled past Bowyer and held on to win the segment. Edwards was third.

In the first segment, defending NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski was the first driver out, felled by a broken transmission on Lap 3. Ten laps later, the race was red-flagged for rain, a delay of 41 minutes. Kurt Busch led every lap to take the segment over brother Kyle and Bowyer.

The night began with the 40-lap, last-chance Sprint Showdown. Jamie McMurray led every lap to win over Ricky Stenhouse Jr., with both advancing to the main event. Danica Patrick transferred into the big race by winning the Sprint Fan Vote.
