Minnesota Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom underwent successful sports hernia surgery on Thursday.

Backstrom, who can become an unrestricted free agent this summer, is expected to be fully recovered in time for the beginning of the 2013-14.

The 35-year-old Finn was injured during pregame warmups before Minnesota's playoff opener in Chicago. Josh Harding started all five games of the Wild's first-round loss to the Blackhawks.

Backstrom went 24-15-3 with a 2.48 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage in the regular season.
