The San Diego Chargers agreed to a contract Thursday with rookie free-agent quarterback Mike Hermann from Division III Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Hermann was a two-time Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year and first-team all-conference pick. He threw for 2,366 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior, with eight interceptions.

In four seasons, he threw for 7,177 yards and 57 touchdowns, with 31 interceptions. He also rushed 435 times for 1,935 yards and 29 scores, including 15 rushing touchdowns as a junior.

He'll be fourth on the depth chart behind Philip Rivers, Charlie Whitehurst and seventh-round draft pick Brad Sorensen.
