Cleveland, OH – The Boston Red Sox placed relief pitcher Joel Hanrahan on the 15-day disabled list prior to Tuesday's game against the Cleveland Indians due to a strained right hamstring that's kept him out of the team's last two outings.
Hanrahan exited Saturday's 2-1 win over Tampa Bay after facing just two batters in the ninth inning. Three days earlier, the right-hander was rocked for five runs and allowed a pair of homers in just two-thirds of an inning, blowing a save opportunity in an 8-5 loss to Baltimore.
The move was made retroactive to April 14.
Andrew Bailey, who blew a save chance before winding up with the win in Monday's 3-2 triumph over the Rays, is expected to serve as Boston's primary closer until Hanrahan recovers.
To fill the roster spot, the Red Sox recalled pitcher Steven Wright from Triple-A Pawtucket. The right-hander went 1-0 with a 2.70 earned run average in a pair of starts with the PawSox to begin the season.
