Lyon closes in on second place with Toulouse defeat

Lyon pulled to within two points of second place in Ligue 1 on Sunday after posting a 3-1 win over Toulouse at the Stade de Gerland.

Clement Grenier got the hosts off the mark first just eight minutes into the match when he found himself in prime shooting position on the right edge of the penalty area following a cross from Alexandre Lacazette and fired it into the bottom right corner for the early one-goal advantage.

The visitors drew level in the 28th minute through Wissam Ben Yedder, who slotted one home from close range and the clubs went into the intermission on even terms.

After the interval, Lyon took the lead for good in the 49th minute as Grenier lofted a cross into the box and Bakary Kone nodded one past Toulouse goalkeeper Olivier Blondel for the 2-1 margin.

Lyon put a bow on its afternoon in the 63rd minute when Gueida Fofana slid one through the box for an unmarked Bafetimbi Gomis, who slotted it into the bottom left corner to secure all three points for his club.

The result pulls Lyon within two point of second-place Marseille with 56 points from 32 matches, while Toulouse remains mid-table in 11th on 41 points.

Elsewhere in Ligue 1 on Sunday, Mahamane Traore, Didier Digard and Dario Cvitanich all netted second-half goals as Nice rolled to a 3-0 win over Sochaux to improve to fifth place on 54 points.

In Sunday's final fixture, Marseille and Lille played to a scoreless stalemate, which brings Marseille to within nine points of league-leaders PSG, while Lille remains in sixth place on 53 points.
