Milan, Italy – AC Milan hung on for a point in a 1-1 draw with Napoli on Sunday at the San Siro despite going down a man for the final 18 minutes of play.
Milan had the better of the play early on and capitalized on a chance in the 29th minute when Mathieu Flamini gathered a pass from Giampaolo Pazzini outside the Napoli penalty area and unleashed a wicked left-footed strike into the bottom right corner to give his club the 1-0 advantage.
But it would not last long as just four minutes later Napoli found an equalizer through Goran Pandev, who fired a left-footed strike into the net from close range.
It appeared the match would end with little drama, but things swung in the favor of Napoli in the 72nd minute when Flamini was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Napoli's Juan Zuniga, reducing Milan to 10.
Napoli sent numbers forward in search of a winner with the extra man, but Milan's backline held firm to secure the point.
The result keeps Napoli in second place in Serie A with 63 points, while Milan remains in third on 59 points.
Palermo 1, Bologna 1
Palermo, Italy - Palermo fell two points back of safety on Sunday after being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Bologna.
Following back-to-back wins, Palermo sat in the bottom three on goal difference and appeared to have momentum. But after Siena's 3-2 victory over Pescara on Saturday, Palermo was only able to muster one point.
Josip Ilicic handed the home side the lead inside of five minutes, but Manolo Gabbiadini equalized in the 17th minute for Bologna, which remains 10 points clear of the drop zone with its third straight draw.
Bologna had the best chance to break the deadlock in the second half, but Alberto Gilardino failed to score in a one-on-one situation with Palermo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino.
Cagliari 2, Inter Milan 0
Cagliari, Italy - A second-half brace from Mauricio Pinilla propelled Cagliari to a 2-0 home win over struggling Inter Milan, which dropped to seventh with the defeat.
Inter controlled most of the play in the first half, but was punished for its wastefulness on the hour mark when Pinilla went down inside the area from a challenge by Inter's Matias Silvestre.
Pinilla picked himself and beat goalkeeper Samir Handanovic from the spot, while he doubled his total 13 minutes later to put the match away after exchanging passes with Santiago Cabrera.
Cagliari extends its unbeaten run in Serie A to five games, while Inter has lost four of its last five to deal a blow to its European aspirations.
Chievo 0, Catania 0
Verona, Italy - Catania's bid for a place in the Europa League took a hit on Sunday as the club played out a 0-0 draw at Chievo.
The result leaves Catania in ninth place and four points back of Roma and Lazio, who sit level on 51 points in fifth place.
Catania carved out the better chances but failed to beat Chievo goalkeeper Christian Puggioni, who turned in a strong performance to help his team claim a point.
Puggioni did well to keep out a first-half effort from Francesco Lodi, while he produced an even better stop on a close-range header from Gonzalo Bergessio.
Genoa 1, Sampdoria 1
Genoa, Italy - Genoa remained in 19th place on Sunday after a 1-1 home draw with Sampdoria that saw Francesco Matuzalem score the equalizer in the 80th minute for the hosts.
The result extends Genoa's winless run to seven matches and leaves the club two points from safety.
Sampdoria took the lead midway through the first half when Citadin Eder fired a free kick underneath the wall that left goalkeeper Sebastien Frey with no chance.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 78th when Andrea Costa picked up a second yellow card, and Genoa took advantage a few minutes later as Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero fumbled a cross, allowing Matuzalem to fire home the equalizer.
Udinese 3, Parma 0
Parma, Italy - Udinese rolled to a comfortable 3-0 win at Parma on Sunday behind a first-half brace from Luis Muriel, keeping Udinese's European hopes alive.
Playing without leading scorer Antonio Di Natale, who was out through suspension, Udinese still had little trouble brushing aside the hosts.
Muriel stepped up for Udinese and scored after 12 minutes following a pass from Piotr Zielinski, while he doubled his total shortly before the break by sweeping home a cross from Dusan Basta.
Roberto Pereyra capped the scoring in the 62nd minute when he scored on the rebound, dropping Parma into the bottom half of Serie A.
Roma 2, Torino 1
Turin, Italy - Roma climbed to fifth place on Sunday with a 2-1 win at Torino after Erik Lamela's 60th-minute goal for the capital side.
Pablo Osvaldo's 22nd-minute opener had the visitors on top, but Rolando Bianchi leveled the contest nine minutes later when he swept home Alessio Cerci's cross at close range.
Cerci struck the post in the second half as Torino pushed for the lead, but Lamela scored on a wonderful curling effort to put Roma ahead with 30 minutes to play.
But the visitors made life difficult on themselves over the last 10 minutes as Federico Balzaretti was sent off, and Torino nearly snatched an equalizer as Roma defender Alessandro Florenzi nearly redirected the ball into his own net.
