AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli has been handed a three-match suspension on Monday by Serie A after receiving a red card following the final whistle of Milan's 2-1 defeat to Napoli.

Balotelli missed his first-ever penalty kick and was shown a second yellow card for arguing with match officials. He was given an additional two-game ban for what the league called "directing insulting and intimidating expressions to the referee at the time of the sending off."

Through four games this season, Milan has collected just four points and is already eight points behind league leaders Napoli.
