2014 Winter Classic to feature Leafs/Wings

New York, NY – The NHL announced on Sunday that the 2014 Winter Classic will take place in Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on New Year's Day.

The game will feature the Detroit Red Wings hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs at the home of the Michigan Wolverines' football team.

This contest was supposed to take place during the current season, but the extended lockout forced a cancellation of the NHL's annual outdoor game back in November.

Detroit and Toronto will be division opponents next season thanks to the NHL's new realignment plan that will begin for the start of the 2013-14 season. This will be the second game amongst division opponents during the Winter Classic, with the other being a contest between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers at Citizens Bank Park in 2012.

"The history of the teams' cross-border rivalry, the nobility of The Big House and the growing tradition of the NHL Winter Classic will raise the anticipation for this event to new heights," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said. "We are delighted to offer our fans a spectacle at which the energy will be unmatched and the demand for tickets will be unprecedented. For anyone involved in any way -- as a player, a coach, an official, a fan -- this NHL Winter Classic will be a truly memorable hockey moment."

In addition to the game, the NHL will also have the SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival at Comerica Park, home of MLB's Detroit Tigers. That event will start in mid-December and feature hockey games representing all levels of the sport. It will be open to the public and will also feature the Alumni Showdown between the Red Wings and Maple Leafs, which might have two games due to the amount of alumni expected to participate.
