Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired goalie Steve Mason from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for goaltender Michael Leighton and a 2015 third-round draft pick.
The trade to Philadelphia offers a fresh start for the former rookie of the year.
Mason shined in his debut season of 2008-09, helping the Blue Jackets make their only postseason appearance. He captured the Calder Trophy after posting 33 wins, 10 shutouts and a 2.29 goals-against average.
The 24-year-old Ontario native failed to duplicate that success over the next three campaigns and this season was supplanted by former Flyer Sergei Bobrovsky.
For his career, Mason has compiled a 96-99-27 record with a 2.90 GAA, .903 save percentage and 19 shutouts.
Leighton, meanwhile, was a key contributor in Philadelphia's run to the 2010 Stanley Cup Final, going 8-3 with three shutouts in 14 games. He has made only two regular-season appearances with the Flyers since.
The 31-year-old Leighton is 35-41-4 with 10 ties and a 2.97 GAA in 105 career games with Chicago, Nashville, Carolina and Philadelphia.
