Once the toast of Sacramento, Maloof brothers no longer Kings of California's capital city

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

The moment will be seared into the memories of long-suffering Sacramento Kings fans forever.

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof, standing together at center court, holding hands and raising their arms in triumph a night after the City Council approved an arena deal between both sides to keep the NBA team in town for at least another 30 years.

Barely a month passed before the Maloofs backed out of that handshake agreement last April.

Now, for the second time in three years, Johnson will make a presentation to NBA owners in New York on Wednesday to keep the Kings from leaving California's capital city. The goal is to block a bid by a group that has a deal with the Maloofs to buy the Kings and move the team to Seattle.
