Timbers' Johnson named MLS Player of the Week

New York, NY – Portland Timbers forward Ryan Johnson was named the Major League Soccer Player of the Week on Monday for Week 6 of the 2013 season.

Johnson, 28, scored a second-half brace on Saturday against the Houston Dynamo, leading the Timbers to a 2-0 win at JELD-WEN Field. He is the third Timbers player to win Player of the Week and second in consecutive weeks after midfielder Will Johnson claimed the honor last week.

Ryan Johnson found the opening goal of the match in the 55th minute after he nodded a cross from Diego Chara past Houston netminder Tally Hall. Johnson doubled his pleasure in the 73rd minute after running onto a nice through ball from Darlington Nagbe. Johnson took a couple touches to reach the Dynamo penalty area and ripped a high shot into the top right corner for the 2-0 lead.

With three goals and one assist, Johnson is Portland's leading scorer through the first five matches of the regular season. He is one of just seven players in MLS with multiple-goal performances this season and is tied for third in the league in goal-scoring.

The MLS Player of the Week award is selected each week by the North American Soccer Reporters. The group consists of members of online, print, television, and radio media.
