The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenseman Ladislav Smid to a four-year, $14 million contract extension.
Smid was set to become a free agent at the conclusion of the season. He has one goal and two assists in 34 games this year.
The 27-year-old Czech native has spent his entire seven-year NHL career with the Oilers, who acquired him from Anaheim following the 2005-06 season as part of a deal for defenseman Chris Pronger. The Ducks made him the ninth overall pick of the 2004 draft.
In 443 NHL games, Smid has 10 goals and 52 assists for 62 points. He had his most productive offense season in 2011-12 with career bests of five goals and 15 points in 78 games.
