Davie, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Dolphins have re-signed cornerback Brent Grimes to a multi-year contract.

Terms were not disclosed, but the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported it to be a four-year deal.

The Dolphins faced a Monday afternoon deadline to work out a contract or place the franchise tag on Grimes, preventing him from reaching the open market for free agency. A franchise tag would have given Grimes a one-year deal at $11.3 million.

Grimes joined the Dolphins last season on a one-year contract after missing all but one game in 2012 with the Falcons because of an Achilles injury. He earned his second career Pro Bowl selection after recording 60 tackles with four interceptions in 2013, helping a Miami pass defense that yielded only 17 touchdowns through the air -- the third-best mark in the NFL.

The 30-year-old veteran from Shippensburg College, spent his first six NFL seasons with Atlanta. He has 17 career interceptions in 75 games.
