The Houston Astros signed infielder Ronny Cedeno to a one-year contract on Sunday.

Cedeno, 30, hit .290 in 16 games with the St. Louis Cardinals in Spring Training before being released.

"Ronny is a veteran player at a premium position that will stabilize our infield," Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said in a statement. "He gives our young pitching staff a quality defender behind them."

Primarily a shortstop, Cedeno has also seen time at second base and third base.

Cedeno batted .259 with four home runs and 22 RBI over 78 games for the New York Mets last season.

A career .247 hitter, the Venezuela native has registered 37 homers, 108 doubles and 218 RBI while playing in 779 games with the Chicago Cubs, Seattle, Pittsburgh and the Mets.
