Kings try to keep rolling on homestand, host Red Wings

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Kings' homestand began with the return of goaltender Jonathan Quick. Three games in and it looks as though it may also get the club back on track.

The Kings resume the five-game stay at home on Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings.

Prior to this extended residency, Los Angeles went winless on a four-game road trip to stretch its losing streak to five games in a row overall. The Kings then got a lift in the opener last Saturday as Quick returned from a strained groin in a 3-1 win over Vancouver.

A shootout loss to Minnesota followed before Los Angeles managed a 4-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday. Quick made 20 saves and has a 1.30 goals against average in three games since returning from his injury that he suffered back in mid-November.

Jeff Carter scored the lone goal of the first period versus the Bruins and the Kings never trailed. Justin Williams posted a goal and an assist in his 800th career game, while Dustin Brown and Alec Martinez also scored.

"Jeff (Carter) played well and got us going with his goal," said Los Angeles head coach Darryl Sutter. "I mean we've played well the last nine games, but this one worked out for us."

It certainly did for Carter, who has nine goals and seven assists over his last 14 games.

Quick could get the start tonight but is just 6-11-0 lifetime versus Detroit with a 3.15 GAA in 17 meetings.

The Red Wings, though, have split their first two on a five-game road trip and are just 4-7-3 in their past 14 games overall. They dropped a 4-1 decision to the San Jose Sharks last time out on Thursday.

Tomas Tatar tallied Detroit's lone goal, while Jimmy Howard allowed all four goals on 23 shots before being replaced by Petr Mrazek to start the third. Mrazek stopped the only three shots fired his way.

"With this group we need good discipline and good goaltending and we didn't get it," Detroit head coach Mike Babcock said.

The Red Wings, who went 0-for-4 on the power play, played a second straight game without forward Pavel Datsyuk due to a lower-body injury. He is also expected to sit out tonight.

Detroit is scheduled to visit Anaheim on Sunday and Howard will get the start tonight in the first of back-to-back games. He is 7-6-0 with a 2.56 GAA in 13 career games versus the Kings.

The Red Wings have won five of their past seven overall versus the Kings, but have lost two straight and four of their last six in Los Angeles.
