Eredivisie club Twente announced Tuesday that it has parted ways with manager Steve McClaren.

McClaren guided Twente to the Dutch league title in 2010, but a 2-1 defeat to Heerenveen on Saturday has left the club in fifth place this term.

"We believe that the disappointing performance of FC Twente under Steve McClaren could be reversed," Twente chairman Joop Munsterman said in a statement. "Steve has however indicated that it is in the interest of everyone to leave the club immediately. We understand his decision and respect it. It is disappointing to say goodbye to the trainer under whose leadership FC Twente won the league title in 2010."

Twente has not won a league match since December 21 when it claimed a 3-0 defeat at AZ Alkmaar.
