Saying he'll always call Buffalo home, Lindy Ruff maintains the itch to continue coaching two days after being fired by the Sabres following a 16-season run.

In making his first public statements Friday since being dismissed, the Sabres' winningest coach misses the job already, and loves the game too much to leave it.

Ruff grew emotional but also displayed a familiar sense of humor during a news conference at the Sabres' arena. He thanked the franchise and the four owners he worked under for giving him an opportunity.

His "biggest disappointment" was failing to deliver Buffalo a championship.

Ruff wasn't surprised to lose his job after Buffalo's 6-10-1 start. And he backed his players, saying they didn't let him down.

Ron Rolston has taken over as the Sabres interim coach.
