Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced Thursday that it has signed former English Premier League standout Nigel Reo-Coker, pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and appropriate visa.

The Portland Timbers had the right of first refusal to Reo-Coker, but Vancouver acquired the rights in exchange for second-round picks in the 2014 and 2015 MLS SuperDrafts.

"Nigel is a leader on and off the pitch," said head coach Martin Rennie. "Although he is only 28, Nigel brings a lot of experience to our club and will be a great addition."

Reo-Coker has enjoyed stints across the English Premier League with West Ham, Aston Villa and Bolton. He has captained all three teams at some point during his tenure with each club.

Per league and club policy, terms of Reo-Coker's contract were not disclosed.
