Quinnipiac University, which is playing just its 15th season of Division I hockey, has become the top-ranked team in the nation.

The Bobcats (21-3-4) were ranked No. 1 Monday in both major collegiate polls, becoming the first athletic program in university's history to accomplish that feat.

The school of about 8,500 students is located just north of New Haven and is best known for its political polling.

But the Bobcats have been steadily moving up the hockey polls while on a 21-game unbeaten streak since early November, going 18-0-3 during that span.

Coach Rand Pecknold calls the ranking a great accomplishment, but doesn't expect the streak to last all season.

He says the bigger goal is to win the ECAC and make a run at a national title.
