Tottenham announced on Monday that the club has agreed to a fee with Schalke for the immediate transfer of midfielder Lewis Holtby.

The 22-year-old had already signed a pre-contract agreement with Spurs to join the club on a free transfer this summer. But Holtby will now move to London before the close of the January transfer window on Thursday after a fee of $2.4 million was agreed upon by the two clubs.

A season-ending knee injury to Tottenham midfielder Sandro created a void in midfield, while Schalke has been interested in signing midfielder Michel Bastos from Lyon and would like to receive a fee for Holtby before his contract expires this summer.

Holtby joined Schalke in 2009 after stints with Alemannia Aachen, Bochum and Mainz and he went on to score 13 goals in 79 matches for Schalke, while earning three caps with the German national team.
