Calgary, AB – Lee Stempniak had a goal with two assists, and the Calgary Flames posted their first win of the season by edging the Edmonton Oilers, 4-3.
Jay Bouwmeester registered a goal and a helper for the Flames, who got 17 saves from Miikka Kiprusoff.
"We did a good job of sticking with it tonight," Stempniak said.
After three consecutive losses, Bob Hartley was able to pick up his first win as the Flames' head coach.
Rookie Justin Schultz compiled a goal and two assists for Edmonton, which has split its first four games. Devan Dubnyk stopped 31 shots.
"As much as the effort was there in many situations, we deserted too much of our principles," said Oilers head coach Ralph Krueger.
Stempniak helped set up first-period goals by Mikael Backlund and Bouwmeester. Schultz scored a power-play marker with 41 seconds remaining in the opening frame.
Curtis Glencross lit the lamp 3:59 into the second period to put the Flames up 3-2. Stempniak then answered a power-play goal by Jordan Eberle with one of his own with the man advantage at the 14:57 mark of the middle stanza.
Sam Gagner was able to beat Kiprusoff, but only two seconds remained in the game.
Game Notes
The last time Calgary opened a season without a win in its first four games was 1999-2000, when it started 0-3 with a tie ... Forward Jiri Hudler made his Flames debut, while Calgary forward Roman Cervenka played in his first NHL game. Hudler returned to the team after the passing of his father. Cervenka missed the first three games with a blood clot.
