Bellator MMA’s second card on Spike TV debuted one of their biggest free agent signings, showed the more exciting side of a criticized champion and had the reemergence of a young Latino fighter.
Ben “Funky” Askren vs. Karl Amoussou, Bellator Welterweight Championship
Askren is probably the most criticized champion in MMA. His fights are often called boring and his wrestling prowess prevails in most of his bouts.
But this time he showed he added a new striking element to his game by gaining a third round doctor stoppage victory over the intense Frenchman Amoussou.
Amoussou would have preferred to keep the fight standing but could not stop Askren who took him down at will.
Clearly Askren is evolving as a fighter.
Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal makes his Bellator Debut, Advances in Light Heavyweight Tournament
Mo was a 25-1 favorite to beat Przemyslaw Mysiala in the opening round of a tournament Mo is expected to win. It took the patient Mo nearly four minutes to end Mysiala’s night with a right hand.
Douglas Lima vs. Michail Tsarev, Welterweight Tournament
“The Phenom” Lima looked to get back on track after winning last year’s tournament before getting derailed in his championship match against Askren.
The Brazilian essentially kicked Tsarev’s leg until Tsarev could barely stand. The referee called the bout in the second round, an impressive win for Lima.
Other Main Card Fights
Ben Saunders defeated Koffi Adzitso via unanimous decision in welterweight tournament quarterfinals.
