Andre Smith scored 14 points to lead Winthrop to a 61-55 victory over Gardner-Webb in a Big South Conference game on Wednesday night.

Christian Farmer had 13 points and James Bourne 11 points and six rebounds for the Eagles (8-10, 2-4), who had lost five of its past six games coming in.

Kevin Hartley led Gardner-Webb (10-10, 2-4) with 13 points, and Tashan Newsome had 11.

The Eagles outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs 18-6 on points in the paint, and Winthrop made 15 of 20 at the foul line to Gardner Webb's 5 of 9.

Winthrop led 18-12 on Gideon's free-throws at 6:55 on the way to a 30-24 advantage at the break.

Gardner-Webb took its first lead in the second half at 39-37 at 15:21 on Max Landis' 3-pointer, but Farmer's 3-pointer at the 12:55 mark gave the Eagles a 44-41 advantage they never relinquished.
