Southampton, England – Southampton extended its unbeaten run in Premier League play to six straight contests on Monday, battling to a 0-0 draw with Everton at St. Mary's Stadium.
New Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino saw his side dominate play in the opening 45 minutes in his first game in charge.
Leading scorer Rickie Lambert had a fantastic chance to put the hosts in front seven minutes from the interval when he got on the end of a corner in the penalty area and headed it toward goal, but it was frantically cleared off the line by Everton's Leighton Baines.
Lambert had another brilliant chance in the 42nd minute, again using his head to put one on goal, but the shot just sailed over the bar.
The Saints sent several shots at Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard, but were unable to find the back of the net in the first half.
The Toffees picked it up a bit after the break and Victor Anichebe had a great opportunity to put the away side ahead when he snuck through Southampton's defense with a nice through ball from Marouane Fellaini and ripped a quick left-footed strike on net, but it was parried away by the left hand of Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc.
Everton had a late chance on a corner kick three minutes from time, but the out-swinging ball was easily cleared away and the teams settled for a point apiece.
With the result, Everton stays in fifth place with 38 points and extends its unbeaten run in league play to three straight, while the Saints remain in 15th place on 23 points, four above the relegation places.
