Michael Higdon's hat trick proved to be enough for Motherwell to avoid a late scare as the club edged St. Johnstone in a 3-2 win at Fir Park on Sunday.

Higdon gave Motherwell a comfortable lead with goals in the seventh and 20th minutes.

The 29-year-old extended Motherwell's lead in the 69th minute, a strike that proved to be the game-winner after Nigel Hasselbaink and Liam Craig brought the visitors to within one with goals in the 76th and 79th minutes, respectively.

The victory sees Motherwell snap a two-game winless run to go level with Inverness on 37 points, nine points adrift of first-place Celtic.

St. Johnstone remains on 30 points as its three-game unbeaten run in league play comes to an end.
