Interpol: match-fixing revenues in billions; police group joins FIFA, UEFA at Rome conference

ROME – Interpol says match-fixing revenues in soccer are in the billions.

The international police agency is leading a two-day conference on match-fixing in Rome. It is joined by the bodies governing international and European soccer.

Interpol Secretary General Ronald Noble says illegal betting generates "hundreds of billions of euros per year. With estimates that large, bookmakers have revenues on the same scale as a Coca-Cola company."

FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke says the only way to combat it is from the bottom up, starting with the youngsters. He says there is "no chance we will change the system without education."
