The Toronto Blue Jays signed veteran catcher Henry Blanco to a non-guaranteed one-year contract worth $750,000 on Friday.

Blanco spent the past two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks and batted .188 with one home run and seven RBI over 21 games in 2012. He missed the final two months of last year's campaign with a ligament tear in his left thumb.

The 41-year-old is a career .227 hitter with 69 homers over 15 major league seasons with nine different teams. In addition to the Diamondbacks, Blanco has played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado, Milwaukee, Atlanta, Minnesota, the Chicago Cubs, San Diego and the New York Mets since breaking into the big leagues in 1997.

To make room for Blanco on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated left- handed pitcher Tommy Hottovy for assignment, just one day after claiming him off waivers from Texas.
