A person familiar with the situation says Mario Cristobal is returning to Miami as the Hurricanes' associate head coach.

The person says Cristobal will also coach Miami's tight ends. The person spoke to The Associated Press Thursday on condition of anonymity because the hiring had not been announced by the Hurricanes. The person says Brennan Carroll, who had coached tight ends, will take over as the team's wide receivers coach.

Cristobal was fired by Florida International last month after six seasons as the Panthers' head coach, taking them to two bowl games.

Cristobal was a graduate assistant at Miami from 1998 through 2000, then a Hurricanes' assistant from 2004 through 2006. He played at the school from 1988 through 1992, part of two national championship teams.
