Malcolm Miller scored 11 points off the bench as Southern University defeated Prairie View A&M 50-45 Friday night in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

The Jaguars (8-6, 2-0), who have won four straight games and seven of their last eight, led by nine early in the second half before allowing the Panthers to close the gap.

Prairie View A&M (5-10, 0-2) got within a point on three occasions, the last time at 41-40 with 5:42 left, but Southern answered with a 9-2 run.

Posting their lowest point total of the season, the Jaguars shot only 30 percent from the field (15 of 50), but hit 17 of 21 free throws. Brandon Moore grabbed 13 rebounds — nine offensive.

The Panthers (5-10, 0-2) shot 33.3 percent (18 of 54), but made only 6 of 10 foul shots in losing their fifth straight game.
