Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is expected to be out of action for a fortnight after picking up a knee injury in training, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed.

Rooney missed United's 4-3 defeat of Newcastle on Boxing Day after sustaining the injury in training on Christmas morning, and Ferguson revealed he is set to miss the remainder of the holiday fixtures.

"It was a volley towards the end of training," Ferguson said. "He did a ligament at the back of his knee and could be out for two to three weeks."

Manchester United squares off against West Bromwich and Wigan in Premier League action before taking on West Ham in the third round of the FA Cup on January 5.
