The Minnesota Twins have signed pitcher Mike Pelfrey to a one-year contract worth $4 million.

Pelfrey, once considered among the top prospects for the New York Mets, is coming off Tommy John surgery performed May 1. He made just three starts last season for the Mets and posted a 2.29 earned run average with no record in 19 2/3 innings.

The 28-year-old right-hander was selected by the Mets with the ninth overall pick of the 2005 draft and made his big league debut a year later. He has a career record of 50-54 with a 4.36 ERA in 153 games, all but four as a starter.

Pelfrey, who is expected to be ready for the start of the 2013 season, made more than 30 starts each year from 2008-11 and had his best season in 2010 with a record of 15-9 and a 3.66 ERA.
