High wind forces suspension of play at Australian Open

SYDNEY – High wind forced the suspension of play Sunday in the final round of the Australian Open.

Gusts of up to 50 mph at The Lakes caused television towers to sway, scoreboards to topple over, balls to move on the fairways and greens, and blew out sand from the bunkers.

Play was suspended with the final groups, including third-round leader John Senden, still waiting to tee off. Officials hoped to resume play by early afternoon when the wind was expected to abate, and still hoped to complete the tournament Sunday.
