Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel signed a new five-year contract on Wednesday that ties him to the club until 2017.

The Nigeria international joined Chelsea from Norwegian side Lyn Oslo in 2006 and he has gone on to make 261 appearances for the Blues in all competitions.

"Chelsea seems like my home now, because I have been here for over six years and I enjoy it here. I am happy and want to keep going and win trophies for this club," Mikel told Chelsea's official website.

"I have basically won everything with Chelsea, and these years have been really special for me. Last season, to win the Champions League was even more special, and I hope these next five years will bring even more success."

The 25-year-old started 15 games in league play last season, but he has seen his role increase this term with Mikel having already started 14 of Chelsea's first 15 Premiership matches.
