Ernesto Valverde was named Valencia's new manager on Monday, taking the place of the sacked Mauricio Pellegrino.

Valverde takes over until the end of the season after he helped Olympiakos win the Greek title earlier this year, and his first match with the team will come on Wednesday in the Champions League against Lille.

Pellegrino was fired after Valencia's 5-2 home defeat against Real Sociedad on Saturday, which leaves Los Che in the bottom half of the league table.

Valverde's playing career included stops at Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao, while he has spent time with Athletic, Espanyol and Villarreal as a coach in La Liga and had two separate spells as boss of Olympiakos.
